DAYTON, Ohio — Kettering Health announced its partnership with the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine to combine their expertise in order to improve health outcomes.

The goal is to advance whole-person care, medical training and support innovative health care systems, according to a press release.

The collaboration will lead to the creation of the joint Health Innovations Hub, bringing together talent and resources from both organizations. They will explore the feasibility of creating a regional Ohio University Heritage College campus in the Kettering Health service area.

The two organizations hope to improve community care across the state, especially in the southwest Ohio region.

“This affiliation is focused on improving health for the people of Ohio,” said Mike Gentry, president and CEO of Kettering Health. “By scaling a trusted relationship with the HCOM, we’ll grow the health care workforce, expand access to care, and support statewide health priorities through education, research and clinical innovation.”

I suspect that this initiative in SWO is at least in part a reaction to the new osteopathic medical school planned for Xavier University.

Ah, Wrong State Medical School. The stories I could tell. This school only exists because of the late Senator Robert Byrd's desire to build a medical school at Marshall University. Six other schools qualitied for the seven-year federal startup money under what in West Virginia was known as the "Marshall Medical School Bill." Only cities with state universities and VA Hospitals qualified.

I don't know about that. The draw for Xavier's new osteopathic school is that its the first Jesuit affilated osteopathic medical school in the United States if you appeal to the Jesuit mission. The tuition is projected to be 60k and there is no in-state break. HCOM in-state is roughly 42k while out-of-state is 61k. Xaiver's new school will probably draw from places like Chicago and Indianapolis. It won't be particularly big either with a goal of graduating 1,300 doctors by 2038 which is about 150 a year once the program ramps up.

OU-HCOM does not like the idea of another osteopathic college in Ohio. They may not be direct competition in any way, as you point out, but the history of the work that the Ohio Osteopathic Association did over decades to get an osteopathic medical school in Ohio makes many D.O.s in the state have a very proprietary feeling toward the school in Athens. A graduating class of 150 is about average for a medical school these days. For many years, OU-HCOM had 100 in its graduating classes, before the expansion and adding the new campuses.

Xavier is barely in Ohio but OK. The idea of going into Kettering with another osteopathic branch I think has more to do with OU-HCOM having run through its other priorities for facilities and another campus is a potential next step for the oteteopatic college if I'm looking at the timeline.

2011 OU reveives the 105 million dollar gift from HCOM.
2012 Dublin Campus approved.
2014 First Dublin medical class.
2015 First Cleveland medical class.
2016 New osteopatic campus appears on campus master plan.
2021 Hertiage Hall new Athens campus opens.
2023 HCOM gives OU another $70 million.
2027 Translational Research Center opens.

If opening extensions was a dream and a new campus on Athens beyond a dream OU-HCOM has already delivered on that. What else can the school do? HCOM in Kettering is now on the menu as another step the college could take. SW Ohio is a large enough population center to support it. Demand for medical school graduates is at an all time high with a large aging population.

To follow on with sports in the 2016 campus master plan its one area the university hasn't tackled that much yet and that is why I believe there is a push on the football side to start placing projects into the pipeline. An addition to the Convo is in the 2016 master plan and I would bet it will announced fairly soon now the academic priorities are satisfied.
